  • September 24th-27th, 1970 / Oktoberfest Trip: My friends Anita Quish and Tim Redman enjoy Italian beer and wine on the night train to Munich. Most of the student body––some 374 strong––was there for this party on wheels.

  • September 24th-27th, 1970 / Oktoberfest Trip: The next morning, our train was still rolling toward Munich; I captured some of the scenery with a borrowed Kodak Instamatic camera. I was already in possession of my Minolta SLR camera, but Romolo, the Italian who sold it to me, suggested I not take it to the raucous Oktoberfest and let me borrow an apparently squalor proof substitute.

  • September 24th-27th, 1970 / Oktoberfest Trip: Tim Redman, Anita Quish, Carol Landini, and I met up with a trio of interesting Germans who escorted us out of the “overly commercialized sham-like” Oktoberfest and into an alleged proper German beer hall.

  • September 24th-27th, 1970 / Oktoberfest Trip: At a “proper” Munich beer hall. L to R: Carol Landini, myself, Wolfgang, our new German friend, and Anita Quish enjoying one of many liters we drank that night. And why not? German beer was smooth and delicious, and the ten major breweries trotted out their best at the annual Fest.

  • September 24th-27th, 1970 / Oktoberfest Trip: At our 2nd German watering hole away from Oktoberfest. L to R: Tim Redman, Wolfgang's wife, Wolfgang, my happy self, Anita Quish, Carol Landini, and a very tired/bored looking friend of Wolfgang's. If 5 1/2 liters of strong German beer wasn't enough, our German friends prevailed upon me to finish the evening with a few shots of mint-flavored schnapps. I guess we had a real "local" experience thanks to them, and we "cured" our hangovers the next day with a salty, porcine German lunch.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: The Grand Canal and a vaporetto, one of the city's water buses. This was the 1st trip I took with my new single lens reflex camera, a Minolta SRT-101 purchased from Romolo, a local Italian who set up shop at the school on Friday's to process our film at a discount price.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: Piazza San Marco as seen from the top of the church. Note the 3 different types of architecture on the 3 sides enclosing the square. And on the pavement, those are clusters of pigeons people just can't resist feeding.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: Piazza San Marco from atop the Cathedral. That pigeon is definitely wondering what I'm doing up there -- or maybe even questioning my very existence. No bread crumbs for you!

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: The Bridge of Sighs passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the New Prison to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. The bridge's name, given by Lord Byron in the 19th century, comes from the suggestion that prisoners would sigh at their final view of beautiful Venice through the window before being taken down to their cells.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: View of St. Mark's from our pensioni. I found myself in a suite composed of three small rooms with several beds and several guys. It was shabby and dark, with mattresses that sank so deep from bodyweight, I later characterized that first night as “sleeping in a hot dog bun.”

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: View of St. Mark's from our pensioni. The Venetian streets were deliciously narrow. One can see why motor vehicles were prohibited on the island.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: After a ten-minute ride on the lagoon ferry, we arrived on nearby Murano, an island which seemed to be a miniature version of Venice. The main attraction was a glass-blowing factory. Gaudy goblets anyone?

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: We were able to devour a six course meal—which included table wine—for a mere 1,000 lire apiece ($1.56). A lot of Italian restaurants on the tourist circuit used the prezzo fisso or "fixed price", also known as the menu turístico, to glean a sizable profit through high volume. BTW, "Friggitori" translates into "fryers." Glad my cholesterol count stayed away from that place.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: A large steel ball suspended in midair inside of an enclosed case at the Venice modern art fair. Back in 1970, this was considered to be inexplicable.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: From Piazza San Marco, a view of the northern edge of the Lido, a 6 1/2 mile sandbar, that among other things, protects Venice from the sea. At least half the Adriatic side of the island is a sandy beach, which I visited with Selene Van Vleck on Sunday afternoon.

  • October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: A farewell view from under one of the three main Venetian bridges. That vaporetto looks pretty full ... which makes me wonder if the Grand Canal had a car pool lane?

  • October 30th to November 1st, 1970 / Florence trip: Autumn was in full bloom in this art capital of Italy. This was already my 2nd trip to Florence, for I had gotten up there the 1st full weekend at school, when I didn't yet have my SLR camera.

  • October 30th to November 1st, 1970 / Florence trip: One of Michelangelo's four Pietás, with the most famous one being at St. Peter's in Rome. In this one, in the Florence Cathedral, the Master had sculpted his own face onto the bearer of Jesus.

  • October 30th to November 1st, 1970 / Florence trip: One of the city's most famous tourist attractions is its large outdoor market that covers several blocks. Rich and aromatic Italian leather goods abound, and here's a boar statue where people rub its snout for good luck, hence the shiny nose.

  • October 30th to November 1st, 1970 / Florence trip: Santa Croce, where many famous Italians such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini are buried (note the grave markers on the floor; the more famous individuals have their own altars on the sides of the church).

  • December 18-24, 1970 / Lucerne trip: With my 1st semester finals completed very early during exam week, I was able to “sneak” in a nice little trip to Switzerland before the Christmas break even began. Anna Marie would be my traveling companion.
