It was shabby and dark, with mattresses that sank so deep from bodyweight, I later characterized that first night as “sleeping in a hot dog bun.”

October 9th-11th, 1970 / Venice trip: After a ten-minute ride on the lagoon ferry, we arrived on nearby Murano, an island which seemed to be a miniature version of Venice. The main attraction was a glass-blowing factory. Gaudy goblets anyone?
