December 18-24, 1970 / Lucerne trip: ... with little sense of elevation, due to the omnipresent cloud cover and poor ground visibility, we continued climbing and conversing—no doubt head deep into some theo-philosophical discussion, like two Medieval monks on a Pilgrimage—barely realizing that we were slowly leaving the city far behind... December 18-24, 1970 / Lucerne trip: ... the paved road finally gave way to a forest path, and the late afternoon sky was growing darker and more foreboding. However, with barely a moment’s deliberation, Anne Marie and I decided to continue onward to find out where this curious path would lead us. The darker and more remote the forest became, the more exhilarated we felt. It seemed that “lost and vulnerable” was somehow giddily translated into “free and safe,” as long as we were together and kept moving forward. We eventually found “civilization” again in the form of an out-of-the-way restaurant and consumed a delicious Swiss German meal. And the owners even drove us home after the restaurant closed, a trip of eight miles!
December 18-24, 1970 / Lucerne trip: The sun came out on my final full day here. Anne-Marie left Lucerne a day earlier than I did because she still had one more exam back at school, American Lit. She was now facing a 14 hour train ride alone with little money, but at least she would finally get to study ... but not quite in the Alps as she had planned. But not to worry, she ended up with a PhD in English from the University of Indiana!
