The Loyola University of Chicago Rome Center campus/1971: The famous––or infamous––Camilluccia's Well. Rome Center legend claimed that a ghost, and a very young ghost at that, haunted our seemingly peaceful campus. Camilluccia Blumenthal was the little daughter of the eighteenth-century Swiss Guard and Vatican diplomat, Captain Bernardo Blumenthal. While she and her family inhabited Villa Tre Colli, the five-year-old was said to have drowned one night in the murky depths of the Villa’s well. Family and neighbors alike grieved over this tragedy and eventually named the adjoining road in her honor, so that she would, in this way, remain alive throughout the ages.
