Rome 1970-71: Rome's Teatro d'Opera. Arguably, the most popular classical musical excursions during fall semester took place the evenings of October 16th and 19th. It was then that a significant portion of the student body attended Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker and Swan Lake, performed by the Soviet Union’s legendary Bolshoi Ballet. Because of the Cold War, the Bolshoi never visited the U.S., so many of us considered this to be a rare opportunity not to be missed
Rome 1970-71: At Rome's Taetro d'OIpera on October 19th, 1970, the Soviet Union's Bolshoi Ballet preforms Swsn Lake. The Rome Opera Theater ended up selling standing-room-only tickets for every performance, but we were lucky enough to acquire ours through the Rome Center well in advance. In fact, the prices were so inexpensive vis-à-vis the healthy American dollar, many of us purchased boxes without even putting much of a crimp in our beer money.
