December 18-24, 1970 / Lucerne trip: ... the paved road finally gave way to a forest path, and the late afternoon sky was growing darker and more foreboding. However, with barely a moment’s deliberation, Anne Marie and I decided to continue onward to find out where this curious path would lead us. The darker and more remote the forest became, the more exhilarated we felt. It seemed that “lost and vulnerable” was somehow giddily translated into “free and safe,” as long as we were together and kept moving forward. We eventually found “civilization” again in the form of an out-of-the-way restaurant and consumed a delicious Swiss German meal. And the owners even drove us home after the restaurant closed, a trip of eight miles!
